Tara Y. Melton is a Judge in the Family Division of the Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis. Judge Melton earned her B.S. Degree from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University and her Juris Doctorate from Florida State University College of Law. Judge Melton is licensed to practice in Florida (1995), Maryland (1997) and Indiana (2008), including the United States District Courts for the Southern Districts of Indiana.
She started her career at Legal Aid Bureau of Prince George’s County, Maryland and continued at Northwest Florida Legal Services, Florida Department of Children and Families, and Marion County Public Defender Agency. Judge Melton started her career in Indiana at the firm formerly known as Lee, Cossell, Kuehn & Love. Judge Melton served as Pro Tempore of the Marion County Small Claims Court, Center Township Division for at least seven (7) years. She was the Director of Mediation at Child Advocates before becoming a Magistrate in the Marion Superior Court’s Family Division from 2021 – 2024. She served in Courts 15 and 24.
Judge Melton is very active in the community and her church. Her passion is mentoring the youth and women. Judge Melton has been married for 26 years and has three birth children and three bonus children who are her biological nephews.
